Study on cathodic reaction control efficiency by low alloy steels

Difference of hydrogen generation phenomena on the surface of the Steels were not observed between carbon steel, atmospheric corrosion resisting steel and 5%-Ni steel. Rust layer was formed on these three-type of steels by steam oxidation method. And the chemical composition of the rust for the steels were basically two (2) layers structure for the previous two steels as hematite (Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$) based for the outer layer and magnetite (Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$) based for the inner layer. And for the last steel, it had three (3) layer in the rust as hematite (Fe$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$) based for the outer layer, magnetite (Fe$$_{3}$$O$$_{4}$$) based for the intermediate layer and Ni based layer for the inner layer. These steels showed mostly same Tafel gradient in their cathodic polarization curves compare with that for no rust specimens. However, the exchange current density which reaction is assumed as a hydrogen generation reaction was largely increased. The cathodic reaction for each steels whose surface is covered by magnetite layer might be accelerated, then the corrosion rate was considered as accelerated, too.

Corrosion of iron buried in clay

To evaluate corrosion behavior of carbon steel, a candidate materials of overpack, buried in soil for a long time, the water pipes buried in freshwater clay for a long time we digged out and the soil environment and the corrosion weight loss of pipes have been researched. From the results, a corrosion model (an empirical equation), an oxygen reduction reaction rate-determing step type, of carbon steel buried in soil was introduced. The corrosion data of under ground pipe collected by the Japan Community Gas Associations was used to increase reliability of the corrosion model equation. These data are one of researches of corrosion behavior of carbon steel buried in soil for a long time studied by at home and abroad. 38 samples buried freshwater clay were selected in 171 samples. With estimating the corrosion velocities and the soil environment factors of the above data, the maximum depth of pit corrosion was calculated by the statistical method of the extreme values using the area of overpack as the recurrent time. The correlation between the soil environment factors and the corrosion weight loss was obtained by the correlation analysis. The corrosion model of the maximum depth of pit corrosion at 0.99 of cumulative probability was compared between the under ground pipe data and the above data. On the reference data and the above data, the corrosion model equation; H = aY$$^{n}$$ was compared with the maximum depth of pit corrosion at 0.99 cumulative probability. The data of water pipes and community gas pipes at 0.99 cumulative probability showed the reasonable values when these data were compared with the reference data. So that the model was proved as a good corrosion model m the neutral low dissolved oxygen environment.

The 9$$^{th}$$ test of Joule-Heated Cylindrical Electrode Melter - Engineering Scale (JCEM-E9 Test) was carried out from June to July 1996, as a part of the development program on an advanced glass melter. The principal purpose of the test was to estimate the effect of noble metal on operation of the melter with simulated high-level liquid waste. Besides, we also evaluated the basic operational characteristics with corrosion of electrodes, qualities of produced glass etc. JCEM-E is an electric glass melter with an internal electrode and an external electrode in a subsidiary furnace. The internal electrode is a rod inserted in the center of external electrode that is a cylindrical tank. The glass is melted by conducting electric current through the molten glass between the internal and external electrodes. The subsidiary furnace is composed of multi-layer refractories inside a metallic casing and is equipped with the resistance heaters. Melting surface area is 0.35 m$$^{2}$$ that i8 approximately half of 0.66 m$$^{2}$$ of TVF melter. In the test, 13 batches of glass was produced and total weight of produced glass was 3663kg. As a result, The maximum processing rate of JCEM-E with simulated HLLW including noble metals was 4.20$$sim$$5.60kg/h, and decreased to less than 80 percent compared with JCEM-E8 Test with non-noble metals HLLW. It was considered that the decrease of the rate arose from concentration of current due to non-uniform distribution of noble metals in molten glass. Judging from the balance of feed and draining, and as a consequence of the observation inside the melter after the test, the draining of noble metals from the nozzle was good. As for the quality of glass produced in the test, properties of concern were comparable with those of standard glass of TVF.

A Study on nuclide migration in buffer materials and rocks for geological disposal of radioactive waste

This thesis summarizes the results investigated in order to establish a basic theory on the predictive method of diffusion coefficients of nuclides in compacted sodium bentonite which is a candidate buffer material and in representative rocks for the geological disposal of radioactive waste by measuring the pore structural factors of the compacted bentonite and rocks such as porosity and tortuosity, measuring diffusion coefficients of nuclides in the bentonite and rocks, acquiring basic data on diffusion and developing diffusion models which can quantitatively predict nuclide migration in long-term. This consists of 7 chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction, in which conventional studies on nuclide migration in buffer materials and rocks for the geological disposal of radioactive waste carried out to date are reviewed, and those problems are summarized as well as the objectives of this study are described. Besides, the difinition of geological disposal is explained. In Chapter 2, it is described on non-steady state diffusion of HTO, Sr-90, Tc-99, I-129, Cs-137, Np-237, Am-241 and Pu in purified sodium bentonite, Kunipia-F, in which the rate of constituent Na-smectite was raised approximately 100wt%. In-diffusion experiments were carried out in a range of bentonite densities of 200 $$sim$$ 2000 kg$$cdot$$m$$^{-3}$$ under ambient aerobic conditions at room temperature (20 $$sim$$ 23$$^{circ}$$C), and apparent diffusion coefficients (Da) were obtained. The apparent diffusion coefficients decreased with increasing dry density of bentonite. It was quantitatively indicated from diffusion experiments using HTO that these Da values include the effect of geometric retardation such as the tortuosity factor of compacted bentonite. It was experimentally clarified that Da is not affected by diffusion time based on diffusion experiments for different experimental periods using Sr and Cs.
